Retained Firefighter wins substantial compensation
The Fire Brigades Union lawyers, Thompsons, have today won substantial damages for one of their retained duty system members.
The member, David Melrose worked at Duns Fire Station and was injured almost 3 years ago when a steel joist collapsed and hit David on the back of his neck. This incident occurred at Eyemouth Golf Course on the 7thJuly 2010.
David’s injuries were severe; he had a number of fractures to his spine and some joint dislocation. He spent several months in the National Spinal Unit at the Southern General in Glasgow.
The Union lawyers contended that ‘there was no good operational reason for Bro. Melrose to be where he was at the time of the accident’ and that no ‘inner cordon’ had been created to contain the risk area.
The settlement represents compensation for his injuries; loss of past and future earnings as a RDS Firefighter; the cost of past and future care and any adjustments that may have to be made to his house.
We have always fought for safer systems of work and have been clear where they don’t exist and our members are injured we will pursue for fair compensation: we would prefer the first option.
