The Northern Ireland Assembly debated this week the proposed amendments to the Public Sector Pensions Bill. As part of that debate there was a specific amendment to limit the retirement age of firefighters and to allow the scheme regulation to set the normal pensions age. The amendment is given below;

Amendment No 10 made: In page 6, line 17,
leave out subsection (2) and insert
"(2) Subsection (1) does not apply in relation to
fire and rescue workers who are firefighters.

normal pension age for such persons
under a scheme under section 1 must be the
age specified by the scheme regulations for the
scheme; and such regulations may specify any
age not exceeding 60, but not less than 55.

Officials have been in contact with Scottish Government to determine any implications of this decision for firefighters in Scotland. Further information will be given as soon as possible.
