At 12.18am on Thursday, 25th August the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was called to a fire at an unoccupied building in Greenock.

The fire broke through the roof and 24 firefighters were engaged in fighting the fire. During the firefighting operations a firefighter was seriously injured following the collapse of an external wall. He is currently in Inverclyde Royal Hospital where he remains in a serious condition.

This accident is a stark reminder of the dangers firefighters face every time they respond to an emergency. Firefighters work within inherently dangerous environments and despite their best efforts to control the many hazards and risks they are exposed to, unfortunately accidents still occassionally happen.

Our thoughts are with our colleague, his family, friends and work colleagues at what must be a very difficult time.
